The Internet Archive<\/a>,\u00a0a\u00a0digital library of\u00a0over 19 petabytes (600 million pages) of digitized texts,\u00a0is in the process of adding a vast collection of free images to their Flickr profile<\/a>.<\/p>\n The library\u00a0has partnered with\u00a0Kalev Leetaru, a\u00a0Yahoo researcher at Georgetown University, to\u00a0extract over 14 million images from 2 million public domain books available for download from the Internet Archive.<\/p>\n Each of the scanned books is being processed not only to extract the very image, but also the accompanying text. This way, when added to Flickr, images\u00a0will be easier to find, share, and work with.<\/p>\n When you’ll visit the\u00a0Internet Archive Book Images photostream –\u00a0flickr.com\/photos\/internetarchivebookimages<\/a>\u00a0–\u00a0you can use the search box to find images inside the collection. Simply, from a drop-down list select “Internet Archive Book Images photostream”.<\/p>\n Every image comes with a detailed description (title, year of publication, authors, and publisher), but that’s not all. As the books were\u00a0OCR\u2019d (scanned text was converted to computer-readable text), you’ll find also “text below” and “text after” –\u00a0approximately\u00a0500 words before and after each image.<\/p>\n The\u00a0image page links to\u00a0other illustrations from the same book, as well as an online book viewer on the Internet Archive – if you want to switch from visuals to words.<\/p>\n So far, Kalev Leetaru uploaded 2.6 million pictures, and every day lots of new ones\u00a0appear. The collection\u00a0will grow continuously even after, with images\u00a0from over 1,000 new ebooks the Internet Archive\u00a0scans each day.<\/p>\nSee also:<\/strong>
