While library stats in the US are highly optimistic<\/a>, the situation is clearly different in the United Kingdom, and the entire European Union.<\/p>\n

CILIP,\u00a0Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, is supporting\u00a0Right to E-Read campaign<\/a>\u00a0to help\u00a0public libraries to be able to lend ebooks free of charge to the public.<\/p>\n

The infographic presented below shows that as much as 85% of ebooks are not available to UK public libraries<\/strong>. What’s more,\u00a0out of the six\u00a0major trade publishers in the UK only three offer some of their ebooks to libraries.<\/p>\n

This situation is an effect of a current European copyright law, according to which the\u00a0publishers do not need to license libraries to lend ebooks at all.<\/p>\n
